a whole new world

I’m a self-confessed internet junkie – I’ve got a profile on all the major social networking sites, and I’m here like…a lot of hours a day, so it’s only natural I’d take an interest in the newest form of pop culture and celebrity: youtubers.

Youtube only started in 2005 (this was a massive shock to me when I found out, I can’t remember life without it) so in comparison to music, tv and cinema it’s a baby right now in terms of age, however as the world rapidly progresses and becomes more and more media, communications and internet focused, it makes sense that the newest form of celebrity should come from the huge market of the internet itself.

But why do we, the humble viewer, become so attached to these people speaking to us from the depths of the internet? They’re easily accessible, that’s a plus. Their videos are entertaining, deep, meaningful, hilarious, musical - everything. Maybe because we feel a sense of familiarity? For many of these people, youtube has become a full time job, but we see them how they really are: normal kids, like us, who just started talking to a camera in their bedroom for fun. Dan Howell, of youtube channel danisnotonfire, says “it’s a personal connection. It’s like you have a friend,” which pretty much sums it up, I think.
Also, it might help that a lot of them are like, really very attractive.

On that note, I present to you a few of my favourite youtubers that you should definitely check out. If you don’t subscribe to any youtubers, I recommend you start, because, guys, this is the future. Plus, as if you don’t need another hot guy or two to obsess about, right?

1. Grace Helbig, aka DailyGrace

Grace was the very first youtuber I ever subscribed to, and still probably one of the funniest. She makes videos every week day, and each day has a different theme with its own little theme song. How to's, reviews, recipes, comments, advice, insults, jokes, and fun abound on her channel, and every day is something different. With over 600 000 subscribers, she's been a youtuber for about 2 years and is also involved doing skits and other videos for the website mydamnchannel. None of her videos are scripted or rehearsed, so you (or Grace, for that matter) never know what's going to happen next.

2. Dan Howell, aka danisnotonfire

Dan is probably my favourite youtuber. Aside from being British and completely gorgeous, he can be hilarious at times and at other times, completely serious. His videos often feature his love for llamas and Maltesers, his best friend Phil and skits where he re-enacts funny scenarios (often dressed up as a girl). His video "The Meaning of Life" actually really helped me through a few breakdowns and crises last year to do with school and everything that comes after, and I watched it a million times and everything fell back into perspective. It's hard to explain my love for this British kid who happens to be an internet cult leader, but I love him a lot. He's almost at a million subscribers, so help him there!

3. Zoe Sugg, aka Zoella

Zoe may actually be the most gorgeous girl in existence, I think, she's absolutely wonderful. She's more of a beauty vlogger, and while I'm not one to own millions of beauty products and do my makeup every day (or ever, really), I could probably still listen to Zoe talk for three hours about the weather, her voice is that lovely (not to mention her face). She talks about beauty products, shopping with her best chummy Louise, and does hauls when she's accidentally been to Primark and bought the whole shop. Again. The bloopers at the end of her videos are always utterly charming as are her vlogs on her second channel, MoreZoella, which often feature her clan of Brit youtube friends, all of which you should subscribe to as well, most of which I've linked below.
